What is the J1 internship and training program?

The internship and training program is available to students and professionals outside of the US who are seeking to gain a cultural experience in the US. the average intern/trainee program runs for up to 12 months. Furthermore, it does not serve as a work program.

What are the basic requirements for the internship program?

a) You must be a student currently enrolled full-time at a degree or certificate granting college, university, or other post-secondary academic institution outside of the United States and pursuing studies in your chosen career field; you must also have finished at least one year of your degree program and completed sufficient coursework in your academic field prior to your internship program start date in order to be sufficiently prepared for the internship.

b) You have graduated from a degree or certificate granting college, university, or post-secondary academic institution outside the US within 12 months prior to the start date of the internship program.

What are the requirements for training programs?

a) Have either a degree or professional certificate from a foreign tertiary-level academic

institution and have at least one year of related work experience in their occupational field

acquired outside the U.S.

What is the cost?

The average price is $4500USD. This includes all fees associated with the sponsor, mandatory health insurance

and embassy.

How much will I be paid?

Students are paid comparable wages to the local job market. If you are an hourly employee, you can expect to earn overtime pay. If you work in the F&B department, you will receive a gratuity on your salary. Graturatuity is on average 18% of the total bill. In addition, you are required to pay federal, state, and city income taxes, but you will be eligible for tax refunds. Taxes are typically around 16%.

Which departments can I work in?

Our sponsorship is currently only accepting participants in the Hospitality and Tourism occupational category. Normally students will intern at host hotels in the front office, food & beverage or culinary departments. However, as we grow, you can expect to see more opportunities in other occupational categories in the future!

How long is the application process?

It ranges from 5 to 8 weeks.

Who covers accommodation?

Upon your arrival, most hotels will allow participants to stay for up to 2 complimentary weeks while they get settled into their own apartment. The participants are responsible for securing their living arrangements, but we do our best to assist with securing accommodations.

Who provides transportation?

Transportation is the responsibility of the student.

Is there an age limit?

Officially the answer is no. However, applicants over the age of 35 will need to provide substantial evidence to show that extra training abroad is important. 

What if I am not offered a job?

The pre-screening Zoom interview is an integral part of the selection process. This allows us to determine if a candidate is a suitable fit for the program. Should it be determined during the interview that the candidate is not a suitable fit, they will be informed accordingly. In the event that a candidate is not selected by one hotel, we will proceed to the next opportunity until a position is secured. It is noteworthy that multiple interviews are not often required. The host hotels acknowledges that the purpose of the program is to provide training and professional development opportunities within the hospitality industry.

What are the steps for applying?

1. The first step in the process is for you to submit your official program application .

2. Following this, we will conduct an interview with you via Zoom. 

3. After the zoom meeting is done if all parties agree to move forward, your resume will be forwarded to the hotel’s General Manager and Human Resources Director.

4.  Once the interview with the hotel is scheduled and an offer is extended, you will be required to pay all fees. 

5. Subsequently, all necessary documents will be submitted to the sponsor for approval, upon which the sponsor will issue a DS-2019. 

6. Finally, you will make arrangements to book your flight.
